It's a California thistle, they are an invasive weed native to southern Europe that grows wild in central & northern CA. They are considered a major pest by agriculture! They can get up to 6' tall. Careful, they have really nasty barbs. Use heavy gloves when you pull it up. Don't let it seed near your property or you will be fighting the darn thing for years. (Don't know how close it was to your house -- if it was a ways away then ignore what I just said about pulling it up) :-)

Yes, it's an invasive weed, but it's also very dear to Scots. I never touch them, but I think they are lovely. (I have to - the man is Scottish).

I saw adorable knitted ones at the last Scottish fest we hit.
